One student died and over 65 coaching students fell ill after they reportedly consumed contaminated water in the hostels in the Jawahar Nagar area of Rajasthan’s Kota.

The deceased Vaibhav Roy, an 18-year-old National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) aspirant, was diagnosed with hepatic encephalopathy and he died during treatment at a private hospital.

After the students vomitted and complained of stomach aches, they were rushed to a hospital. Most of these students tested positive for hepatitis–A. The administration and health department are providing medical assistance to the students.

Kota chief medical and health officer (CMHO), Jagdish Soni, said, “Food and water quality is being checked in hostels. Students who are sick are being examined and are admitted to the hospital.”

Doctors treating the students in Kota said that apart from coaching students, other people are also suffering from infections due to the contaminated water as well.

Kota (city) additional district magistrate Brij Mohan Bairwa said that the CMHO has been directed to probe the matter and a report from him is awaited.
